Olalla Teresita Paneque Obituary
Olalla Teresita Paneque, age 86, passed surrounded by loved ones on September 18, 2026. She was born in Camaguey, Cuba, on May 29, 1940.
Her friends and family affectionately called her “Maruja.” Olalla worked as a school teacher until leaving Cuba with her husband and two small children for Madrid, Spain, in 1971. In 1974, the family left Spain and arrived in West New York, New Jersey. That same year, a family of 4 became a family of 5 when her third son was born. Olalla and her husband, Tomas, worked tirelessly to provide a great life for their 3 boys, Tomas, Pablo, and Ivan.
Olalla earned a living by taking care of children out of her home until she and Tomas opened Union City Poultry Market in 1985. After working there for 15 years, she concentrated primarily on managing the family’s properties. She absolutely adored her 3 sons and never missed an opportunity to tell anyone how proud she was of them.
Her 3 boys and husband were her priority, and nothing else came first.
Olalla taught her 3 sons the value and importance of hard work, integrity, decency, and optimism. She never forgot her family in Cuba and was often attentive to those in need. Olalla enjoyed many summers at the family’s tiny, Long Island bungalow. Later in life, she and Tomas purchased a farm in Vernon, New Jersey, where many more great memories were created.
Most recently, Olalla really liked visiting the Jersey Shore, where she spent time with her sons and their families. Besides being a wonderful mother and wife, she was the most loving grandmother or “abuela” to her 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at abuela’s house were always special family occasions. Her turkey stuffing and lechon were a fan favorite! Olalla built a special bond with her grandchildren through her love, warmth, compassion, and generosity. The passing of her granddaughter, Campbell, in 2006, greatly affected her.
We are all better because she was such an important part of our lives and will continue to be. ¡Mami, te queremos mucho! ¡Gracias por ser tan especial!
Beloved wife of Tomas R. Paneque. Devoted mother of Tomas R. Paneque and his wife, Ivonne; Pablo A. Paneque and his wife, Madelin; and Ivan Paneque and his wife, Eike.
