Avelino Armas Obituary

Avelino Armas entered eternal rest on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021 at Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, NJ.

A long-time resident of North Bergen, NJ, he was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba to his parents Jose Armas and Maria (Capdevila).
In 1971, he arrived in the United States with his wife, Hilda Armas (who passed away in 2019), and his daughter, Hilda.

Avelino’s story from when he first stepped foot in New Jersey to his final days is a true tale of triumph and celebration, especially for Cuban immigrants.
He came to this country starting completely from scratch. Over the span of his life, he went from working in a factory, to owning and running multiple businesses (a grocery store, butcher shop, & gas station) and acquiring dozens of residential and commercial properties in the area – all of this accomplished with just an elementary education.

His hard-working mentality and ability to learn things on his own brought him far in life, but it was never just about him. Avelino became a pillar of the community by providing jobs for the unemployed and helping support many who couldn’t afford the next month’s rent.
One of his happiest moments was in 2018 when he was honored for his work in the community – the corner of 60th Street and Palisade Avenue in West New York, NJ was named “Avelino Armas Way”.

More than all of this however, Avelino was a devoted husband and a family man who adored his daughter (Hilda Armas Morfi), her husband (Felix Morfi), and his cherished grandchildren (Hilda, Stephanie and Felix Morfi). He provided great joy to many who crossed his path. His love for life and activity meant he was always doing something or wanting to travel, even when his health was in decline – a zest for life that never diminished and will always live on.
